While January is the start of a new year, it is also the end of the three (3) year MCLE compliance period for California attorneys in Group 2 (last names H-M).
CA CLE Credit Requirements
The MCLE rules for California state that attorneys are required to complete 25 credit hours every three (3) years.
Of the 25 required credit hours, 4 credit hours must be for legal ethics, 1 credit hour must be for elimination of bias, and 1 credit hour must be for competence issues, such as substance abuse and mental health.
There are two types of CA MCLE credit you can earn, participatory (live seminars, live online seminars, live webinars, OnDemand courses) and self-study (downloadable courses, CDs, DVDs, & books). At least 12.5 credit hours must be earned with participatory credit. Specialty credit hours may be taken as participatory or self-study.
Reporting CA CLE Credits
California attorneys are responsible for tracking and reporting their own MCLE credits and must keep these records for at least one year after reporting. You can track your MCLE credits using this Personal Log.
