General Minnesota Continuing Legal Education Credit Requirements

How many CLE credits do you need in Minnesota, and what types of CLE credit do you need?

Active status attorneys in Minnesota must complete 45.00 CLE credits every 3 years to maintain good standing with the Minnesota State Bar.

In addition, Minnesota attorneys must complete 3.00 ethics credits and 2.00 elimination of bias credits and 1.00 mental health and substance use in the legal profession credit every reporting period. Elimination of bias credits do not count towards the ethics credit requirement.

Credit Hour: 60 minutes (rounded down to the nearest 1/4 hour).
When is the Minnesota CLE reporting deadline?

Although the CLE reporting period runs from July 1 to June 30 every three years, attorneys may report credits until August 31 without penalty and without requesting an extension.

What are the Minnesota CLE reporting categories?

Each category runs for a duration of three years, starting from July 1 and ending on June 30 of the following year:

  • Category 1: 2027, 2030, 2033.
  • Category 2: 2025, 2028, 2031.
  • Category 3: 2026, 2029, 2032.
What Minnesota CLE reporting category am I in?

Upon admission to the Minnesota State Bar, attorneys are assigned to one of three categories for CLE reporting purposes. You can find your CLE reporting category by searching in MARS (the Minnesota Attorney Registration System). You can also check your CLE reporting category and credit transcript through the Minnesota CLE Board OASIS attorney portal.
How do I report my Minnesota CLE credits?

Minnesota attorneys must report their own CLEs electronically using the Minnesota CLE Board OASIS attorney portal. There is no fee for online reporting. Or, you can mail an Affidavit of Compliance to the CLE office, along with a $10 fee.
What CLE course formats are accepted in Minnesota?

Minnesota attorneys may complete CLE credits through any of the following approved formats:

  • Podcasts and Webcasts
  • Simultaneous broadcasts

No. The Minnesota CLE rules do not authorize attorneys to carry forward excess CLE credits.

Yes. As of January 1, 2024, attorneys may fulfill all 45.00 CLE credits for their reporting requirements using OnDemand courses or other approved distance learning formats.
How many Minnesota CLE credits can I earn with OnDemand courses?

Starting 1/1/2024 all 45.00 credits may be taken as OnDemand courses.
Is in-program attendance verification required to receive Minnesota CLE credit?

No. Minnesota does not require in-program attendance verification to receive CLE credit.

What are the CLE requirements for newly admitted attorneys in Minnesota?

Newly admitted attorneys must meet the same CLE requirements as all active Minnesota attorneys: 45.00 credits per 3-year reporting period. Your first reporting period includes a full 3 years plus the remainder of the year in which you were admitted.

For example, if you are admitted in October 2022 and are in Category 3, you must report 45.00 CLE credits by August 31, 2026.
How can Minnesota Newly Admitted Attorneys Fulfill Their CLE Requirements?

Newly admitted attorneys in Minnesota must meet the regular, 3 year, 45 credit CLE requirement for active status attorneys. New attorneys have a full 3-year reporting period, in addition to the balance of the year they are admitted, to complete Minnesota CLE requirements. Examples of accepted course formats include:
Can I count CLE credits I completed before my official reporting period begins in Minnesota?

Yes, if you complete approved CLE courses after admission to the Minnesota State Bar but before your official reporting period begins, you may use those credits to meet the requirements for your first CLE reporting period.
