Catherine Ongiri

is an experienced attorney, policy advocate, and passionate leader in the legal community. She is the managing attorney in the State Bar of California's Office of Professional Competence. In this role, Ms. Ongiri manages the Ethics hotline and the support side of the Lawyer Assistance Program. Additionally, she has lead responsibility for devising and developing the State Bar's preventative education curriculum. Previously, Ms. Ongiri worked at the Judicial Council of California as counsel for its Advisory Committee on Providing Access and Fairness, and created a preventative curriculum for judicial officers statewide. She has a strong background in adult-centered learning and developing curricula that engage the learner. Prior to joining the Judicial Council, Ms. Ongiri practiced appellate law as a Deputy Attorney General in the Health, Education and Welfare Section of the Office of the Attorney General, California Department of Justice, and at the Family Violence Appellate Project. She is also a longtime member of the Earl Warren American Inn of Court in San Francisco, California.

is a career prosecutor, presented by the Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court with the California Public Lawyer of the Year award from the State Bar's Public Law Section. She was named as one of the 2024 Top Professional Responsibility Lawyers by the State Bar of California and honored with the 2023 Instructor of the Year Award by the California District Attorneys Association. Dr. Patrick was also recognized by her peers as one of the top ten criminal attorneys in San Diego by the San Diego Daily Transcript. She has completed over 165 trials ranging from hate crimes to domestic violence to first-degree murder. Before becoming a prosecutor, Dr. Patrick was a trial attorney and team leader in the San Diego Public Defender's office. She is the owner and founder of Black Swan Verdicts. Dr. Patrick is also a longtime member of the Louis M. Welsh American Inn of Court in San Diego, California.

What happens if my course is cancelled?
In the unlikely event that NBI cancels or reschedules an upcoming program, each registered attendee will be contacted via email by a representative of NBI. Outreach to attendees begins as soon as NBI is made aware that a program will not move forward at its originally scheduled date and time.
