Speaker bio
Hon. Erik Thorson
is a Superior Court Judge in the Maricopa County Superior Court of Arizona. He serves as the Arizona Tax Court Presiding Judge and has a calendar that includes Commercial Court cases, while generally presiding over cases for the Civil Department of the court. Judge Thorson was recently the judicial sponsor for a team that developed a five-year branch facilities plan for the Judicial Branch in Maricopa County. Before taking the bench and after graduation from the University of Michigan Law School, Judge Thorson was a lawyer with Snell & Wilmer L.L.P., first as an Associate and then as a Partner in its Special Litigation and Compliance Group. He chairs the Arizona Supreme Court's Advisory Committee on the Rules of Evidence, and he chaired the Task Force on the Arizona Tax Court Rules of Practice - the work of that group led the Arizona Supreme Court to adopt the first restyled tax court rules in 22 years. Judge Thorson has served for eleven years on the State Bar of Arizona Civil Practice and Procedure Committee. He is a veteran petitioner of several court rules cycles for a variety of rule sets, served as a member of the Task Force on Rules of Procedure for Special Actions, serves on the Advisory Committee on Evidence Retention and on the Judicial Branch in Maricopa County AI Committee, and chaired the Ariz. R. Civ. P. 5.4 Working Group in 2018 and 2019 regarding filings under seal in civil cases. Judge Thorson is a member of the National Conference of State Tax Judges and the International Association of LGBTQ+ Judges. A journalist before law school, Judge Thorson earned a B.A. in Journalism from Arizona State University, serving as Editor in Chief of the University's morning daily, The State Press, as a college senior.
