Speaker bio
Joseph A. DeWoskin
is a solo practitioner in Kansas City, Kansas. He practices in the areas of family law, military law, landlord/tenant, Uniform Services and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA), and general litigation. Mr. DeWoskin is admitted to practice law in Missouri, Kansas, U.S. Supreme Court, U.S. Federal District Court for the Western District of Missouri, U.S. Federal District Court of Kansas, United States Army Criminal Court of Appeals, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces. He has over 29 years of legal experience, including nearly nine years of service on active duty with the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General's (JAG) Corps. Mr. DeWoskin retired in 2018 as a Lieutenant Colonel, after serving approximately 27 years both on active duty and in the U.S. Army Reserves. He has been retained on multiple occasions to testify and assist as an expert on legal matters relating to divorce involving military personnel; including cases involving the division of military retirement, Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA), Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA), and rights under the Uniformed Services Former Spouses Protection Act. Mr. DeWoskin has taught CLEs nationwide on issues including military specific family law issues related to divorce, child support, child custody, and the division of the military retirement, as well as the SCRA and USERRA. He earned his B.A. degree from Washington & Jefferson College and his J.D. degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law.

Gene Brentley Tanner
is a partner with Parker Bryan Britt Tanner & Jenkins, PLLC. He was certified by the North Carolina State Bar as a board-certified specialist in the area of family law in 2012. Mr. Tanner focuses his practice on family law matters including separation, divorce, child custody, child support, alimony, military pension division orders, court orders acceptable for processing, issues related to survivor benefit plans, property distribution, high-asset divorces, divorces involving complex business valuations, professional practice divorces, domestic violence, premarital agreements, separation and property settlement agreements, and qualified domestic relations orders. He is known both statewide and nationally as an expert in family law matters related to military divorce issues, military pension division orders, federal pension divisions, court orders acceptable for processing, and former spouse survivor benefit rights. Mr. Tanner earned his B.A. degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his J.D. degree from the Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law at Campbell University. He is a member of the Wake County Bar Association, Tenth Judicial District Bar, Family Law Section of the North Carolina Bar Association and Family Law Section of the American Bar Association.
