Speaker bio
John Whitbeck
is the founder and majority shareholder with WhitbeckBeglis, PLLC, in Leesburg, Virginia. He focuses his practice on family law, criminal law, mental health law, civil litigation and many other areas. Mr. Whitbeck has also been certified as an expert witness in litigation. He is an adjunct professor of law at George Mason University Law School, teaching mental illness law. Mr. Whitbeck is the director of the George Mason University Law and Mental Illness Clinic. He has served as substitute judge in Virginia district courts, hearing civil and criminal matters including family law cases. Mr. Whitbeck also served as a special justice for civil commitment hearings in the 20th Judicial Circuit, which requires him to sit as a judge for hearings to committ mentally ill individuals to psychiatric treatment. He has also served as a special prosecutor in the Loudoun County General District courts. Mr. Whitbeck earned his A.B. degree from Occidental College and his J.D. degree, cum laude, from George Mason University-Antonin Scalia Law School.

Kabara Korth Praskavich
is a partner in the law firm of Maddox & Gerock, P.C., in Falls Church, Virginia. She has experience working on all types of family law issues and leading clients through custody, support, property/debt division, divorce, modifications, and enforcement actions, and tailors her approach to each specific case. Ms. Praskavich especially enjoys working on cases involving business division and other complex assets, and takes pride in ensuring her clients understand the process and law. She earned her B.A. degree from the University of Chicago and her J.D. degree from Georgetown University Law Center. Ms. Praskavich is a member of the Northern Virginia Chapter of the Virginia Women Attorneys Association, Fairfax Bar Association and Virginia State Bar.

Alexandra D. Bowen
is the founding partner at Bowen Ten Long & Bal, PC, in the Richmond Metropolitan area where she has concentrated her practice representing families in separation and divorce since 1988. Her practice experience embraces many areas of the law including general civil litigation, family law, landlord tenant matters and evictions, handling residential real estate closings, drafting wills, and advising clients on small estate planning. Ms. Bowen also has represented small business owners and entrepreneurs with issues and concerns in regard to family law matters. She brings to her practice of law years of financial and business management experience to benefit clients in high asset and income divorce matters. Ms. Bowen has handled many high conflict (and low conflict) custody matters involving serious mental health issues and addiction. This experience supports her practice advising business clients and representing all parties in divorce litigation involving complex financial issues. Ms. Bowen is a member of the Virginia State Bar, Virginia Bar Association, Virginia Trial Lawyers Association, Metro Richmond Family Law Bar Association and the Metropolitan Richmond Women’s Bar Association, local bar associations, and the Association of Family and Conciliatory Courts. She has volunteered extensively with central Virginia Legal Aid and served on local non-profit boards. Ms. Bowen graduated from the University of Virginia and earned her J.D. degree from the University of Richmond.

Erika E. MacCormac
is a partner with the law firm of Winslow McCurry & MacCormac, PLLC, in Midlothian, Virginia. She is the leader of the firm's family law team and practices solely in the area of family law, focusing on divorce, child custody and visitation, spousal support, child support, adoption, and prenuptial and postnuptial agreements. Ms. MacCormac understands the myriad of emotional, financial, spiritual, and practical implications and challenges presented by divorce and custody matters. She is equally comfortable in the courtroom trying a case or at settlement table working on a collaborative resolution. In addition, Ms. MacCormac routinely serves as a guardian ad litem for minor children in the context of abuse and neglect proceedings, juvenile delinquency hearings, and contested custody and visitation litigation. She also presents for National Business Institute on family law matters, and serves as a guest lecturer at the University of Richmond Law School Family Law Clinic Seminar. Ms. MacCormac is a member of the Chesterfield County Bar Association and the Virginia State Bar (Family Law Section). She earned her B.A. degree from Virginia Tech and her J.D. degree (Certification of Concentration in Family Law) from the University of Richmond.

Hope C. Hutchinson
is an attorney and owner of Hutchinson Law Center where her practice areas include family law and serving as a guardian ad litem. Ms. Hutchinson is licensed to practice law in Virginia. She is a member of the Virginia State Bar (member, Family Law Section), Young Trial Lawyers Association, American Bar Association, Greater Peninsula Women's Association, and the Ninth Circuit Family Law Committee. Ms. Hutchinson earned her B.A. degree from Christopher Newport University and her J.D. degree from Regent University.

Timothy S. Bird
graduated first in his class at Virginia Tech in political science, and went on to earn his law degree from the College of William & Mary. He began practicing law in 1995. Early in his career, Mr. Bird was a partner in a large Northern Virginia law firm where, in addition to having a private practice, he served as a Commissioner in Chancery, Motions Conciliator, and Neutral Case Evaluator for the 19th Judicial District. In 2003, he left the impersonal world of "big law" and returned to beautiful Southwest Virginia, where he opened his own law practice to better serve the individuals, families, and businesses of Smith Mountain Lake and its surrounding communities. With Kheystone Legal, PLLC, Mr. Bird focuses a large portion of his practice helping families, and the companies they own, navigate the many challenges of personal and business life. Just a few short years after returning to Southwest Virginia, he was recognized as one of the leading family law attorneys in the region. In addition, from 2012, and continuing to the present, Mr. Bird has been selected a Virginia Super Lawyer, a master barrister in the Ted Dalton Inn of Court, and a distinguished lawyer by the Expert Network. And he is a past president of the Franklin County Bar Association. Mr. Bird also enjoys serving the local community, as a past board member of the local Chamber of Commerce, a volunteer at numerous community events, and recreational sports coach.

Michael J. Champlin
is a partner with Champlin & Associates, PLLC, where his main areas of practice are collections. He teaches at the University of Richmond School of Continuing and Professional Studies. Mr. Champlin has shared his legal knowledge with students as an adjunct professor at the University of Richmond for 35 years. He is a member of the Richmond, Henrico County and Chesterfield bar associations; and the Virginia State Bar. Mr. Champlin earned his B.A. degree from Wake Forest University and his J.D. degree from Cumberland School of Law, Samford University.
