Speaker bio
Mariah L. Sukalski
is an attorney in Belin McCormick, P.C.'s litigation group where she regularly assists clients in every stage of litigation, from initial investigations to appeals. Whether representing employers, individuals, or businesses, she approaches each case with vigor. She has represented clients in a variety of disputes, including breach of contract cases, disputes over wills and trusts, wrongful termination, and others. Ms. Sukalski also has experience in alternative dispute resolution methods, including mediation, to negotiate settlements outside of court. In her labor and employment law practice, she regularly assists clients in several employee relations issues, including maintaining compliance with employment regulations, advising on discipline/discharge decisions, and drafting and enforcing company policies, handbooks, and contracts. Ms. Sukalski has also played a pivotal role in defending employers in cases involving allegations of wage and hour violations, retaliation, discrimination, harassment, constructive discharge, and wrongful termination. She earned her B.A. degree from the University of Minnesota and her J.D. degree from the University of Chicago Law School. Ms. Sukalski is a member of the American Bar Association, the Iowa State Bar Association and the Polk County Bar Association.

Joshua Hughes
is an attorney with Dorsey & Whitney LLP in the firms labor and employment group, where he represents and advises employers across a wide range of employment matters. Mr. Hughes practice spans litigation, advisory work, and transactional support, allowing him to provide clients with realistic, strategy-driven counsel at every stage, whether they are trying to prevent disputes, structure compliant agreements, or resolve claims that have already arisen. He earned his B.A. degree from Drake University and his J.D. degree with Highest Honors, Order of the Coif from Drake University Law School. Mr. Hughes is committed to the communities he serves. He is a member of the Iowa State Bar Association Young Lawyers Division, where he serves on the executive and diversity committees, and he volunteers his time to support the ISBA's middle and high school mock trial program. He has also been recognized for his pro bono work on behalf of individuals navigating the legal process of affirming their gender identity, including name changes and other critical legal documentation. Mr. Hughes is admitted to practice in Iowa, Minnesota, U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Iowa and the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Iowa.

Alyssa M. Heusinger
is an attorney in the Omaha, Nebraska, office of Jackson Lewis P.C. With a decade of experience as a human resource professional, she brings both first-hand knowledge and actionable insights to her practice, one that is dedicated to collaborating with employers to develop practical policies and compliance programs that foster a stable workplace. As a member of the firm's employment litigation practice, Ms. Heusinger thoughtfully balances legal strategy with her clients' business objectives when guiding matters toward resolution. She represents employers in claims involving discrimination, harassment, and retaliation under Title VII and the ADA, recognizing that even single-plaintiff cases can pose significant business disruption. Ms. Heusinger earned her B.A. degree, cum laude, from Bob Jones University; M.B.A. degree from University of Nebraska – Lincoln; and her J.D. degree, Schmid Honor Scholar, from University of Nebraska College of Law. While attending the University of Nebraska College of Law, she served as a judicial intern for the Honorable L. Steven Grasz at the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, as well as the Honorable John M. Gerrard at the United States District Court, District of Nebraska. Ms. Heusinger also served as executive editor for the Nebraska Law Review and student attorney for the Housing Justice Clinic, receiving the Schmid Honor Scholarship in recognition of her academic excellence. Before attending law school, she advanced quickly in her human resources career from an entry-level Human Resource Coordinator to Business Partner to Director of Human Resources in industries spanning hospitality to technology. Committed to deepening her expertise, Ms. Heusinger also earned her SHRM-Senior Certified Professional designation and an MBA, applying this broad knowledge to deliver practical, business-minded solutions to every client she serves. She is a member of the Nebraska State Bar Association and is admitted to practice in Nebraska.

Scott Fintzen
is a partner with Gaido & Fintzen. In March 2002, he formed Gaido & Fintzen with Peter Gaido, envisioning responsive, effective, and high-quality legal services to businesses, tax-exempt organizations, and individuals. Mr. Fintzen's practice currently focuses on for-profit and tax-exempt organization formation, applying for and maintaining tax-exempt status, corporate governance, employment law, estate planning and probate, intellectual property, contracts, administrative law, e-commerce, insurance, risk management, real estate, leases, meeting and event planning, litigation, and international transactions. He graduated from Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service in 1990 with a degree in international economics, a concentration in development economics, a certificate in African studies, and a proficiency in French. Mr. Fintzen earned his Juris Doctorate degree from the Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law in 1993. In 1998, he became the associate general counsel for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). At the ELCA, Mr. Fintzen provided legal counsel on issues, including intellectual property, publishing, contracts, e-commerce, meeting and event planning, corporate governance, tax-exemption, fundraising, real estate, employment law, risk management, insurance coverage, litigation, and international law. He is licensed to practice law in the District of Columbia, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Virginia, and Wisconsin.
