Agenda

All times are shown in
  1. The Delayed Cancer Diagnosis

    • A patient presents with persistent symptoms. Imaging is performed but not properly followed up. Diagnosis is delayed until the condition becomes advanced. Learn where breakdowns in follow-up create liability, how the standard of care applies in diagnostic workups, and how to prove causation when earlier intervention may have changed the outcome.
  2. The Surgical Error

    • A routine procedure results in a preventable surgical mistake, leading to serious complications. This case examines the difference between preventable errors and acceptable medical judgment, how surgical and post-operative failures are evaluated, and how liability is allocated between physicians and hospitals.
  3. The Medication Mistake - When the EMR Fails

    • A patient receives the wrong medication or dosage, resulting in injury. Use this scenario to analyze prescribing and dispensing responsibilities, the role of pharmacists versus physicians, how EMR systems contribute to errors, and how causation is established in drug-related injury claims.
  4. The Patient Who Was Sent Home Too Soon

    • A patient is discharged despite warning signs and later suffers a serious medical event. This case highlights the duty to monitor and reassess, how discharge decisions are scrutinized, where communication breakdowns occur, and when providers remain liable after a patient leaves care.
  5. The Delayed C-Section

    • A delay in intervention during labor results in permanent injury. Through this case, examine obstetrical standards of care, the timing of critical decisions, fetal monitoring issues, and how these cases are evaluated given their high exposure and long-term damages.
  6. The ER Misdiagnosis

    • A patient presents with serious symptoms that are misinterpreted in the emergency department. This scenario examines triage, differential diagnosis under time pressure, emergency standards of care, and common defense strategies.
  7. The Procedure Without True Consent

    • A patient undergoes a procedure without adequate disclosure of risks or alternatives. This case explores informed consent requirements, documentation pitfalls, and how these claims differ from standard negligence-based malpractice theories.
