Speaker bio
Norman R. Newman
is a retired attorney who practiced law in Indiana for over six decades. Prior to his retirement in 2026, he was a partner and later senior counsel in several distinguished local and regional law firms. Mr. Newman's practice focused on commercial real estate and other business transactions, and on related activities, including entity formation and structuring and contract negotiation and drafting. He has written and published numerous articles on these topics. Mr. Newman also has lectured on these topics for the Indiana Continuing Legal Education Forum, the International Council of Shopping Centers, the National Business Institute, and other CLE providers. He is a summa cum laude graduate of the Indiana University McKinney School of Law, where he also was an adjunct professor for several years. Mr. Newman is listed in Best Lawyers in America and is a fellow of the American College of Real Estate Lawyers.

Seth B. Zirkle
is a partner with Kahn, Dees, Donovan & Kahn, LLP, where his practice focuses on all aspects of real estate, business, banking, and construction matters. Mr. Zirkle brings a wealth of experience in counseling clients on creative, and yet practical and successful solutions navigating perplexing issues to garner the best outcome. His passion for his practice is built on more than a decade of representing clients as diverse as Midwest commercial property managers, Mid-South affordable housing developers, the U.S. General Services Administration, public housing authorities, and closely-held family businesses. Mr. Zirkle earned his J.D. degree from the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law and his undergraduate degree from Wabash College.

Phillip W. Smith, II
is an attorney practicing out of Dickinson Wright's Grand Rapids office. His practice focuses on corporate, finance, and real estate law. Mr. Smith assists a broad range of business clients in a variety of matters, including business formation, mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance, loan documentation, and real estate transactions. Prior to beginning his legal career, he served for six years in the United States Army with one deployment, achieving the rank of Captain. Mr. Smith earned his B.S. degree from United States Military Academy West Point and his J.D. degree from Indiana University, Maurer School of Law.

Grant Puleo
focuses his practice on a wide variety of real estate, finance and business transactions. He has extensive experience in a broad array of commercial, multi-family and educational facility (student housing) real estate transactions, including acquisitions, development, construction, affordable housing, P3, syndication, dispositions and specialized leasing and financing of all product types throughout California and the United States. Mr. Puleo's finance experience includes both borrower and lender representation in the origination and workout of complicated debt and equity transactions, such as acquisition and construction financing, mezzanine financing and synthetic leasing transactions. He also represents clients in business matters involving the transfer of business assets and property and the formation and restructuring of joint ventures, private placements, opportunity funds and other business entities. Mr. Puleo is also a seasoned trial attorney, having tried over a dozen jury trials and several dozen binding arbitrations and mediations involving real estate, finance and business disputes, lis pendens, quiet title and partition actions, as well as risk management and litigation avoidance counseling. Mr. Puleo has also testified as an expert witness in trial, binding arbitration and in deposition. Mr. Puleo is an adjunct professor of law at California Western School of Law, where he lectures on commercial real estate transactions. He is a member of the Advisory Board of Endeavor Bank and serves as pro bono legal counsel for various non-profit clients. Mr. Puleo is admitted to practice in the state of California.
