Overview

The AI Tool That Saves You an Hour Can Also Destroy Privilege in One Paste

Nearly a third of law firms have suffered a security breach, and small firms are the favored target, with the fewest resources to recover. AI has only raised the stakes: attackers now craft flawless phishing and voice-cloning scams, while a single careless paste into a consumer chatbot can hand privileged client data to a vendor that trains on it. That risk is no longer hypothetical after a 2026 court ruling held a consumer AI tool's terms of service destroyed attorney-client privilege - no breach required. With technology competence now an enforceable ethical duty in nearly every state, an unvetted app or unencrypted laptop can put you in violation even if nothing is ever stolen. This practical, plain-English program shows solo and small-firm attorneys exactly what “reasonable” security looks like today, including how to use AI without surrendering confidentiality, so you leave with an affordable action plan you can put in place this week. Register today!

  • Clarify your ethical and legal duties under ABA Model Rules 1.1 and 1.6.
  • Use AI tools without surrendering client confidentiality or attorney-client privilege and know which tiers are safe for client work.
  • Identify the highest-impact, lowest-cost security controls that satisfy “reasonable” safeguards for a small practice.
  • Vet cloud, email, and AI vendors so a third party's weak security doesn't become your liability.
  • Recognize and defend against AI-amplified attacks like deepfake phishing and voice-cloning scams.
  • Build a written incident response plan so you know exactly what to do in the first 24 hours of a breach.

Abbreviated Agenda

  1. Ethics: Your Professional Duties in a Connected, AI-Driven Practice
  2. The Core Controls That Matter Most
  3. Securing the Cloud, Email, Vendors, and AI Tools
  4. When It Goes Wrong: Insurance and Incident Response
