In Virginia, active status attorneys must complete 12.00 CLE credits (including 2.00 ethics/professionalism) every year to maintain good standing with the Virginia State Bar.

Credit Hour: 60 minutes (rounded to the nearest half-hour).

Virginia attorneys must complete all 12.00 required CLE credits by October 31 each year and report their credits to the Virginia MCLE Board by December 15 at 4:45 p.m. EST.

The reporting period is 1 year and runs from November 1 through October 31 for all attorneys.

NBI will send you a Certificate of Attendance (Form 2) and a verified certificate of completion. Follow the directions on Form 2 to certify your attendance online with the Virginia State Bar website and to view your current MCLE Report. If you prefer, you can mail your completed Form 2 to the Virginia State Bar.

Following the end of each compliance period review your MCLE End of Year Report provided by the MCLE Board.

Experienced attorneys can fulfill their Virginia CLE requirement by completing courses approved and accredited by the Virginia Mandatory Continuing Legal Education Board. Examples of accepted course formats include:

You can carry over 12.00 CLE credits to the next reporting year. You can carry over up to 8.00 pre-recorded credits and 2.00 ethics/professionalism credits.

Attorneys in Virginia can earn a maximum of 8.00 CLE credits with pre-recorded courses.

Yes. All newly admitted Virginia attorneys must take the Harry L. Carrico Professionalism Course within 24 months of admission to the Virginia State Bar.* This requirement is separate from your Virginia MCLE requirement but will earn CLE credits for professionalism.
