Speaker bio
David A. Guerrettaz
is a partner with the law firm Ziemer, Stayman, Weitzel & Shoulders, LLP located in Evansville, Indiana. He focuses his practice on immigration law, primarily in three areas: employment and family-based immigration as well as litigation before the U.S. Immigration Courts (“EOIR”). Mr. Guerrettaz is an active member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) for which he has served on several committees, written articles on various facets of immigration law, and presented on several immigration law panels. He is also an active member of the Indiana Chapter of AILA, for which he has served as its chairman. Mr. Guerrettaz earned his undergraduate degree, summa cum laude, from Marian University in Indianapolis, Indiana. He then earned his J.D. degree from Syracuse University College of Law and his Master of Arts degree in international relations from the Maxwell School of Citizenship & Public Administration. Mr. Guerrettaz is a member of the Indiana State and Evansville bar associations. He serves on the Board of Directors for Indiana Legal Services, Inc., for which he served as its president between 2019 and 2021. He has also served as an adjunct professor of business law at the University of Evansville, where he has taught for over 20 years.

John Langmaid, IV
focuses his growing practice on helping individuals, groups, and businesses in general litigation and immigration matters. After growing up in the Fort Wayne area, he attended college at the University of Evansville, where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in biology. During college, Mr. Langmaid was active in organizations such as Sigma Alpha Epsilon and the school's International Club, of which he was an executive member. After college, he attended the University of Kansas School of Law where he earned his J.D. degree. During law school, Mr. Langmaid clerked for Ziemer, Stayman, Weitzel & Shoulders, LLP and decided to return to Evansville to begin his practice. He is a member of the Indiana State Bar Association and Evansville Bar Association.

Karen S. Law
is an adoption and immigration attorney practicing in Virginia. Her immigration practice is national. Ms. Law graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Law in 1985 and became licensed in Virginia in that same year. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Adoption Attorneys and a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, Virginia State Bar and Virginia Women Attorneys Association. Ms. Law also co-chaired the International Adoptions Committee for the American Academy of Adoption Attorneys for three years and served on the AILA International Operations Liaison Committee for two years. Working with those professional associations, she submitted comments to USCIS on proposed rules, operating procedures and policy memoranda. Ms. Law also has assisted with drafting federal and state legislation and has provided comments and technical expertise to legislators. She was designated as a 2013 Angel in Adoption by the Congressional Coalition on Adoption. In cooperation with the Loudoun County Department of Family Services and the Virginia Women Attorneys Association, Ms. Law has co-chaired the annual celebration of adoption in Loudoun County, Virginia, Loudoun Adoption Day, for eleven years. She often speaks at national conferences on intercountry adoption issues and publishes articles on those same topics. Ms. Law enjoys volunteering at orphanages throughout the world, including South Africa, Nicaragua, Honduras, Mexico, Belize, and Jamaica.

Patrick Slaughter
is the managing partner with the Law Offices of LaFevor & Slaughter in Knoxville, where he focuses his practice in family law, immigration and criminal defense. Mr. Slaughter is a member of the Tennessee and Knoxville bar associations, and the American Immigration Lawyers Association. He has been selected to Super Lawyers Rising Stars for 2018. Mr. Slaughter earned his B.A. degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and his J.D. degree, summa cum laude, from Lincoln Memorial University.
