Speaker bio
Daniel A. Griffith
is the managing attorney of Whiteford, Taylor & Preston LLP's Delaware office and co-head of the firm's Tort and Insurance Litigation Department. He specializes in the areas of commercial litigation and professional liability defense, with a concentration in the defense of municipal liability matters, particularly those involving alleged police misconduct. Mr. Griffith has defended police officers from approximately 15 Delaware municipalities, in claims ranging from 4th Amendment search and seizure issues to excessive force claims involving tasers and/or canines. He has significant trial experience in Delaware, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Mr. Griffith has tried cases in a wide variety of areas including copyright infringement, insurance coverage/bad faith, employment discrimination, municipal liability, civil rights and professional negligence. In addition to representing professionals (attorneys, insurance professionals, private and public employers, and police officers) in litigated matters, he has represented commercial and personal lines insurance carriers, multi-national corporations, municipal entities and state governments. Mr. Griffith is a frequent speaker and writer on issues related to civil trial practice, including evidence, federal pre-trial practice, expert issues, building civil trial skills and ethics. He wrote What the Civil Court Judges (in Delaware) Want You to Know, and moderated a judicial panel seminar of the same title. Mr. Griffith has written for and spoken at Delaware seminars titled "Advanced Police Liability Issues Under §1983," "Defending Claims Against Public Entities," "Police Liability Claims," and "Handling Claims Against the Local Government." He is admitted to practice in New Jersey and Delaware state and federal courts, and before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit and the U.S. Supreme Court. Mr. Griffith earned his B.A. degree from Rutgers University and his J.D. degree from Rutgers University School of Law.

Megan T. Mantzavinos
is a partner with Marks, O'Neill, O'Brien, Doherty & Kelly, P.C. and serves as the managing partner of the Maryland office. She focuses her practice on employment and local government matters, including civil rights and land use litigation, as well as appellate advocacy. Ms. Mantzavino has extensive experience in litigating cases in both the Maryland and Delaware courts, and has argued before the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, Delaware Supreme Court, Maryland Court of Appeals, and the Maryland Court of Special Appeals. She graduated from the University of Delaware, with a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy. Later, Ms. Mantzavinos attended Widener University School of Law as an evening division student. During law school, she worked full-time as a paralegal in the Delaware office of a Philadelphia-based insurance defense firm. Ms. Mantzavino is admitted to practice in Delaware and Maryland. She is also a member of the Delaware State Bar Association, and served as a past chair of its Women and Law Section.

Dawn C. Doherty
is a senior partner with Marks, O'Neill, O'Brien, Doherty & Kelly, P.C. She developed the firm's professional liability practice, which defends both institutional and individual defendants from the areas of behavioral health, nursing home and home healthcare, traditional medical negligence matters, physicians, hospitals, group practices, free standing clinics and outpatient facilities, as well as legal malpractice. Ms. Doherty is an active lecturer for the Delaware State Bar Association, Pennsylvania Bar Association and National Business Institute on issues involving insurance coverage disputes. She maintains a practice in both states in this area, as well as representing carriers in their capacity as excess insurer; assuming defense trial responsibilities at the point of tender through verdict in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland; or monitoring and negotiating matters during trial. In the last several years, Ms. Doherty has developed a multijurisdictional trial practice representing insureds as national trial counsel. She is a member of Pennsylvania, New Jersey State and Delaware State bar associations; Court of Appeals, District of Columbia 1998; United States District Court of Delaware 1993; United States District Court of New Jersey 1987; United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania 1987; and Washington, D.C. District Court 1988. Ms. Doherty earned her B.A. degree, summa cum laude, from LaSalle University; and her J.D. degree from Temple University School of Law.
