Speaker bio
Daniel A. Griffith
is the managing attorney of Whiteford, Taylor & Preston LLP's Delaware office, and co-head of the firm's Tort and Insurance Litigation Department. He specializes in the areas of commercial litigation and professional liability defense, with a concentration in the defense of municipal liability matters, particularly those involving alleged police misconduct. Mr. Griffith has defended police officers from approximately 15 Delaware municipalities, in claims ranging from Fourth Amendment search and seizure issues, to excessive force claims involving tasers and/or canines. He has significant trial experience in Delaware, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Mr. Griffith has tried cases in a wide variety of areas including copyright infringement, insurance coverage/bad faith, employment discrimination, municipal liability, civil rights, and professional negligence. In addition to representing professionals (attorneys, insurance professionals, private and public employers, and police officers) in litigated matters, he has represented commercial and personal line insurance carriers, multi-national corporations, municipal entities and state governments. Mr. Griffith is a frequent speaker and writer on issues related to civil trial practice, including evidence, federal pre-trial practice, expert issues, building civil trial skills and ethics. He wrote What the Civil Court Judges (in Delaware) Want You to Know, and moderated a judicial panel seminar of the same title. Mr. Griffith has written for and spoken at Delaware seminars titled "Advanced Police Liability Issues Under §1983," "Defending Claims Against Public Entities," "Police Liability Claims," and "Handling Claims Against the Local Government." He is admitted to practice in New Jersey and Delaware state and federal courts, and before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit and the U.S. Supreme Court. Mr. Griffith earned his B.A. degree from Rutgers University and his J.D. degree from Rutgers University School of Law.

Melissa Day
is an assistant prosecutor and the chief of the juvenile division of the Stark County Prosecutor's Office. She is authorized to practice in all state courts throughout Ohio, as well as federal court in the Northern and Southern districts of Ohio. Ms. Day is a member of the Stark County Bar Association, Ohio State Bar Association and the Order of Barristers. She earned her B.A. degree from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and her J.D. degree from the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law. Ms. Day is also OPOTA certified. and regularly teaches legal courses to recruits at multiple police academies in northeast Ohio.

Mark E. McGrady
is an attorney with Farrar|Bates|Berexa, practicing in the areas of insurance defense, municipal liability defense, civil rights defense, police liability defense, governmental tort liability defense, employment law, employment discrimination, and trial and appellate law. Mr. McGrady has been admitted to practice law in Tennessee, Indiana, and Ohio. He earned his B.A. degree, summa cum laude, from Wabash College and his J.D. degree, with high honors, from Duke University School of Law.

Nicole Knox
is a solo practitioner with the Law Office of Nicole Knox, PLLC in Dallas, Texas; practicing criminal defense in Texas state courts and in multiple federal district courts in and outside of Texas. Her results as a trial lawyer have earned her recognition as a leader in her field among her peers; including awards from the Dallas County Criminal Defense Attorneys' Association, Texas Super Lawyers Rising Stars, and The National Trial Lawyers Association. Ms. Knox's dedication to bold and zealous defense of her clients has led to her reputation as a legal expert on criminal cases, and she has appeared on CNN, CBSN, and on all DFW affiliates news stations. She is often invited to discuss controversial Second Amendment issues; and has appeared as a frequent lecturer to local handgun license holders, as a legal expert appearing on FOX4 news and in the Texas Tribune, and as a panelist of her peers discussing “stand your ground” laws at the American Bar Association conference (2013). As president of the Dallas Women Lawyers Association (2015), Ms. Knox's dedication to the advancement of women in the profession was recognized by the National Conference of Bar Presidents, and she has been featured in local, state, and national publications for her advocacy for achieving parity in the profession. Ms. Knox earned her B.A. degree, magna cum laude, from University of Mississippi and her J.D. degree from Texas Wesleyan School of Law.
