Speaker bio
Daniel R. Shulman
is a trial lawyer in Minneapolis, Minnesota, who has been trying cases for the past 50 years. He is a trial attorney with the Minnesota ACLU. Mr. Shulman has been chief counsel in antitrust and other complex commercial litigation involving major industries in a variety of cases ranging from data storage, media, food, oil and gasoline, airlines, consumer electronics, medical electronics, health care, thoroughbred horses, and many other areas. He has also been counsel in trademark and patent infringement actions, and has an active pro bono civil rights practice. Mr. Shulman is a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers; International Academy of Trial Lawyers; Litigation Counsel of America, Trial Lawyer Honorary Society; and the Nation’s Top One Percent, National Association of Distinguished Counsel. He is a member of the American Bar Association, Minnesota State Bar Association and Hennepin County Bar Association. Mr. Shulman earned his undergraduate degree, with honors, from Harvard University, his Master's degree from Yale University; and his J.D. degree, cum laude, from Harvard Law School. He has twice been named a Minnesota Attorney of the Year.

Mark West
is a sole practitioner in San Gabriel, where he practices in plaintiff personal injury and wrongful death, products liability law, medical malpractice, and business civil litigation. Mr. West has published several articles and frequently lectures. He is admitted to practice in the Northern, Central and Southern U.S. District courts in California; and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals; along with the Supreme Court of the United States. Mr. West has also been admitted pro hac vice in the state and U.S. District Court for Nevada, and the U.S. District Court for Minnesota. He is a member of the American and Los Angeles County bar associations, State Bar of California, Consumer Attorneys Association of Los Angeles, Consumer Attorneys of California (past legislative district coordinator), and the American Trial Lawyers Association. Mr. West earned his B.S. degree from New Hampshire College (now Southern New Hampshire University) and his J.D. degree from Southwestern University School of Law.

Jan I. Berlage
is a partner with Gohn Hankey & Berlage LLP. His practice focuses on general business litigation, ranging from commercial disputes to bankruptcy to intellectual property. Mr. Berlage has extensive experience in trials, arbitrations, mediations, and administrative hearings, including arguments before the Maryland Court of Appeals and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third and Fourth circuits. He has secured major jury verdicts and large settlements for both businesses and individuals, as well as successfully defended against multi-million dollar claims in both state and federal court. Prior to private practice, Mr. Berlage served as law clerk to the Honorable E. Stephen Derby, U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Maryland. He has taught pretrial litigation practice at the University of Maryland School of Law, and served on the Board of Governors for the Maryland State Bar Association and the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, Maryland State Action Committee. Mr. Berlage is a fellow of both the American and Maryland State bar foundations; presents regularly at CLE courses; and has been the chair of numerous committees at both the national and state level. He earned his B.A. degree, with honors, from Wesleyan University; and his J.D. degree from the University of Virginia School of Law, where he served as executive editor of The Journal of Law & Politics; and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

James M. Susag
is a shareholder with Larkin Hoffman Daly & Lindgren Ltd. in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Since 1995, his commercial and real estate litigation trial practice has focused on franchise, dealer and contract disputes, real estate, construction and land use. Mr. Susag has extensive first chair litigation experience representing clients in numerous jury and court trials, domestic and international arbitrations, administrative proceedings, and appeals. He is a member of the Minnesota State, Hennepin County and Ramsey County bar associations; American Bar Association's Forum on Franchising; and International Franchise Association. Mr. Susag is admitted to practice in state and federal courts in Minnesota and Wisconsin, as well as the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh, Fourth and Eighth circuits. He earned his B.A. degree, summa cum laude, from the University of St. Thomas; and his J.D. degree, summa cum laude, from William Mitchell College of Law.
